MySQL and Kernel Update

Postby UNFLUX on Mon Jun 20, 2005 7:00 pm

Our servers have been updated over the past couple of days with the latest in patches and fixes for both MySQL and kernel.

Kernel is now running 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp
MySQL is now running v4.1.11

In this process, we found several users who were running out of date scripts and software, which were causing some issues with server performance and some intermittent downtime. These issues, users, and software has been addressed and removed or patched. Specifically, outdated PHPBB forums were exploited and used for DOS attacks which brought one of our servers to a hault. This is unacceptable, and our policies for software are strict for this very reason. These recent problems have caused us to enforce our policies more strictly, as it's not fair to other users on the server to lose their site from a lack of updates.

Users running out of date software that is deemed a security risk will be warned via email and given 72hrs to comply with updating or removing and questionable scripts and software. Failure to comply will result in removal of the script or software, and possible account suspension or termination.

During these upgrade processes, we make every attempt at avoiding problems and keeping interruptions of service to a minimum. If you experienced any brief downtimes recently, these upgrades are most likely the cause. Everything is running smoothly as usual now!

If you have trouble with your MySQL db since this update, there a few tweaks and nuances to the update that may need to be addressed. In most cases, we have found the problems resolved easily with a simple line of MySQL code provided by the software creators. If you have trouble with this, we will be glad to help.

Any questions or problems, please let us know!
