Query on sub-domains

Postby Ganceann on Mon Oct 02, 2006 12:11 pm

Hi,

My current hosting expires at the end of the year and I am now looking around for alternative hosting. I have found this through Ozzu.com some months back and bookmarked it for closer to current host expiration time.

The issue I have with my current host is they have not set up their subdomains to act correctly on the server and this is cause for concern on my plans for one domain name where I have also an existing and more established subdomain.

Basically I am looking at running an article script on the main domain and also the same article script on a subdomain - both would be totally seperate entities... the current host has configuration errors and mod_rewrite does not work on subdomains... with approx 1000 websites on that server I guess they wouldn't miss me :P

Anyway, I am hoping to be able to initially start off on the basic plan as I am currently revamping a site which is likely to see traffic increase considerably - well hopefully.

However, I do need mod_rewrite to function correctly as seperate entities for the main domain and a sub-domain (and also that the script is able to function as intended - in general it is supported by most hosts).

I would appreciate it if this could be checked out - I will pm the site where the script can be downloaded if that is possible to run the scenario outlined. The script itself is extremely straightforward to install - although it uses xinha CMS which takes a while to upload.

This is a long post - but I dont want to extend my current hosting by even a month so would be looking to start a migration sometime next month so everything could be transferred smoothly over well before my current hosting expires (due to expire on new years eve) :P

Thanks.

Yes mod_rewrite should work perfectly fine on both the regular domain and subdomains as long as you use it correctly.

As far as the script, it should be fine if its written in PHP or PERL. We also have MySQL databases if you need that with your script.

I hope that helps to answer your question.

Well, I am using mod_rewrite exactly the same as the people who made the script and it works fine for their subdomain (they use a standard hosting setup on a different hosting provider), just doesn't work on my current one. I checked the configuration of a test subdomain and it isn't setup correctly by the hosts (go - da ).

I also didn't like the fact their customer service suggested I would be required to get a server manager to implement a server wide fix on my shared hosting after I queried whether they addressed a vulnerability with mod_rewrite on linux servers using the wildcard redirect. I felt it was totally substandard customer service to be referred to a premium rate US telephone number (I am in the uk), to be able to just check if they had addressed a security issue that affected 1000+ customers on every linux server they hosted... the phone call would have cost me $50+ just waiting on hold and then likely passed between 10 different customer service reps at $3-4 per minute on top of that... and the fix would be a generic response that I should move to a dedicated server where I could have better support when all I wanted was to check had they addressed a widely documented security vulnerability.

In saying all that :P

I have reflected on simply seperating the subdomain into its own right and I purchased a domain name to host the revamped site...(new name, new look but same initial content).

I will be looking at getting some initial hosting this week or early next week to start working on revamping my existing site.

I would then transfer the current domain over as well in its existing form (as an add-on domain) and would look to set up redirects from the subdomain to the respective categories and pages on the new domain.

I assume with Cpanel it is a matter of simply doing the redirects online and redirecting from a subdomain of an addon domain to the main hosted domain shouldn't cause any problems?

Thanks.
