DNS A record

Postby MasterZ on Sun Oct 01, 2006 1:01 am

Is there a way to modify the DNS A record? i'm not talking about the redirection, it works slightly differently and is causing a few problems.

sample of the difference:
Redirect: user inputs subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com and it redirects to eternaltruthministry.com/whatever and that is what is displayed in the browser URL.

A record, user inputs subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com and the source in the record actually becomes subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com and it always stays subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com.

My last host let me actually modify the A records, is that possible with you guys?

I am not sure how things are set up here - but since domain names are not sold by unflux.net - it may be that you can control the A name through the DNS management of your domain name registrar?

Yeah the only DNS portions you can change directly through your control panel is MX records. Everything else you will need to request directly to us and we can make the changes for you.

What exactly are you wanting modified? You can add subdomains in your control panel and it will automatically create the A records for you so that subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com is actually subdomain.eternaltruthministry.com

Is that what you are wanting?

By the way, when you setup a subdomain make sure you do it correctly. In the control panel under Sub Domain Maintenance area there are a few ways you can create a subdomain. One way is to make a redirection (which you do not want), and the other way is to make it so it adds an A record.

So under the subdomain area if you are getting a redirection like you do not want please go in there and find it next to the "Remove Redirection" button, and then actually remove it. Then once you remove the redirections this time when you set up the subdomain on that same page do not use the area next to "Setup Redirection", as that is the wrong area for what you are wanting. Go up a bit and you should see button that says:

"Add"

Next to that you can select your base domain and to the left of that you can add your actual subdomain there. Enter that in and it will create a directory in your ftp area under your main domain as the same name as your subdomain. However, when you goto subdomain.yourdomain.com it will in fact only load it like that without redirections.

I hope that makes sense.

yeah, that's how I setup the subdomain and if I go to the subdomain it works.

The problem that I am having, is I want radiopic.eternaltruthministry.com to resolve to an ip address and actually be the IP. When you go to radioipc,eternaltruthministry.com it sends you to the specified IP address but in the address bar it shows the IP, not the subdomain and that server doesnt' allow front end access through the IP, only through a domain name. Probably not the best setup on their part but I had it working on my last server and when I switched to this server I dropped the service until this week when I'm trying to get everything back up and running again.

Yeah unfortunately with the way we setup things you have to access your content via domains or subdomains. The reason being is that the ip address is actually a shared IP address. For example you will see that eternaltruthministry.com and unflux.net are in fact the same ip address.

I am not sure why you want to do it this way, usually its the other way around people want to do things because a domain name is something that would most likely always be fixed, while an ip address could always change down the road. That decision is up to you obviously, but I don't think we can help you out with this one, you will likely need to have a third party host setup that gives you a dedicated ip address, and then forward that domain to the ip address from your actual registrar. Doing it like that would make it show the IP address in the browser.

I hope that makes sense.
